Triple Glazing in Energy Efficiency Retrofit Project

Posted: December 3rd, 2011

With the emphasis on energy efficiency a project was recently completed, involving the installation of high performance triple glazed windows and doors. This project was entered into a competition held by the Technical Strategy Board entitled ‘retrofit for the future’. Demonstrating how a typical 1950’s or 60’s house could be upgraded and transformed to achieve around 80% energy use reduction, and negating the need for expensive rebuilds. The Nottinghamshire house in question was a perfect candidate for the project being a mid-terrace property of multi-frame construction [MFC]. This kind of non-standard building method was common in the 1950’s – 60’s and there will be many more homes which could benefit from these type of carbon reducing home improvements.

The improvements have resulted in bringing the 20th century home into the 21st century with a combination of 0.8 W/m2K triple glazed casement windows, 1.0 W/m2K 54mm triple glazed doors, and an increased application of comprehensive wall, floor and loft insulation.

This economical and successful solution has also been brought up to present day standards with the implementation of a package including photovoltaic [PV] panels, an air source heat pump, and a mechanical ventilation and heat recovery system [MVHR]. Low energy lighting and appliances have also been used where possible to further reduce the carbon footprint.

A thermally superior home can be created or enhanced for most properties through use of double ortriple glazing on casement, tilt & turn or sash windows. PVC double glazing or triple glazing essentially cuts CO2 emissions and can potentially save £253.00 per year on heating bills.

Triple glazing is not necessarily the best option for every property, a number of issues need to be considered and balanced. If you are considering having triple glazing fitted, please call us on 01268 726262 with your details and we can advise you.
