CE Marking – Not Just Another European Charter Mark

Posted: July 12th, 2013

Okay, Essex Trade Windows might have to confess that CE Marking is just another European Community charter mark but it is one that we welcome.

From the 1st July 2013, CE marking has become mandatory on many building materials including double glazed windows, glazed units, PVCu products, UPVC doors, composite and GRP front and back doors.

logo

CE stands for “Conformité Européene” (literally: European Conformity) and is intended to make it possible to compare similar products throughout the European Union. CE Marking is part of the harmonisation of European standards – hENs – and places an obligation on companies to verify that the product meets the specifications of the Construction Products Directive.

For double glazed windows and PVCu products this includes a requirement to obtain initial type test reports from the PVCu suppliers. To set up factory production controls to ensure consistency of product quality. To produce a declaration of performance on the key indicators of strength of safety features, the use of dangerous substances and the therma value (U rating) of the product.

It has to be stated that CE marking is not a guarantee of quality. CE marking is based upon self declarations from manufacturers. Essex Trade Windows welcome the legislation as a step in the right direction. We only use Profile 22 sculpture suite products in our double glazed windows. Our double glazed units are A-rated for thermal efficiency, our exteriors doors and windows are designed with security in mind, and the quality of our workmanship comes with guarantees.

What we would say is that if you come across double glazing or exterior doors without CE marking then be rightfully suspicious but even with CE marking, do your research into the quality and reputation of the company that supplies and installs your new or replacement double glazing.
